Structure-guided drug design for sodium-glucose transporters.

About

Nadhiri Kaijage is a doctoral researcher in the MEDΦ group working on the sodium-glucose transporters SGLT1 and SGLT2. The central question is how to achieve selective SGLT1 inhibition, an unmet goal with potential across diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer.

The approach brings together cryo-EM structures, AlphaFold2 predictions, molecular dynamics and free-energy calculations such as MM/GBSA to map binding modes, sodium coupling and the conformational transitions that govern transport. This work was published as a lead-author review in Frontiers in Molecular Biosciences in 2025.
